The Optical Effects

I saw most of Hausu September 26th 2015 on a late night TCM showing. One thing that really struck me were the opticals. They don't look like they were shot on film as usual at the time but rather like they were shot on Hi Def video and composited electronically. I know there were experimental electronic compositers in existence in the late 70's, Van der Veer effects used one for many shots in Flash Gordon in 1980. Hausu was released in 77', and it has very sophisticated, and plentiful, blue screen visual composites for the time. Does anyone know if this film utilized an early form of high definition compositing?
