AllCinema/Stingray has released the special edition DVD; however, unlike previous releases, they no longer offer them for sale via Amazon.co.jp. You have to order directly from them, and they don't ship overseas.

I snagged a very-slightly used copy via Yahoo!Japan Auctions, but because I needed an international auction deputy service, and because it was a bit of a bidding war, in the end I paid more than the actual cost of a new copy. No matter, the "used" copy was still pristine.

The DVD's main feature is the re-titled "Nuclear Terror" cut in widescreen, both English and Japanese audio, optional Japanese subtitles. This cut remixes the opening credits and early scenes a little (without harming the Jeff Wayne score) and adds a few scenes deleted from the theatrical version. It is an arguably better cut, despite the Wonder Bread title.

The theatrical version is included, but unfortunately Stingray was unable to obtain a complete print, so some scenes are taken from other sources of varying quality. Some sources had no English audio, so there are stretches of Japanese-only audio.

Extras include deleted scenes and a trailer for the DVD (most easily found on YouTube), and a little pamphlet with some poster art and Japanese text.

Want to see it? Hint: gro.noddegameniC.

Squishy can you help me with a copy of GOLDEN RENDEZVOUS please?

This has been released in Australia on dvd. Try ebay.com.au or ezydvd.com.au It is Region 4/PAL so you will need a multi-system TV and multi-regional dvd to play it outside of Australia. The box indicates it is Full Frame. I haven't seen it so it will either be Panned and Scanned (ie. re-formatted to a 4:3 aspect ratio) OR it will be an Open Matte transfer, ie shot to be viewed 1.85 to 1 but with extraneous image content at the top+ bottom of the screen. For movies released this way (eg. Paramount's THE COUNTRY GIRL) it's fine to watch them on Zoom on a Wide Screen TV. You then see the intended composition for cinema screens.

You can now buy it in the USA at http://www.daaveedee.com.

You will need a multi region DVD player. The player can be obtained at http://www.bombayelectronics.com/

The Umbrella Entertainment release is 4:3 pan and scan and was taken from a videotape (you don't see videotape dropouts on a dvd everyday!), but at least this is the theatrical release version and is fine, just the way it is.
