The DVD I have of this says on the front that it is a "Carlo Ponti production of an Ettore Scola film", whilst the credits on the back of the DVD claim that it is a De Sica film and that he is the director. What is going on here?

Yes. This film was directed by Ettore Scola.
Sophia Loren did make some other movies with Vittorio De Sica though.
Marcello Mastroianni talks about making the film with Ettore Scola in the documentary, 'Marcello Mastroianni: I remember' (which is very good if you are a Mastroianni fan).
