It's a period piece so if you were not around in 1976, it may not have much meaning for you. It was mild recession and most of us were not affected by it, but the private aerospace industry had not taken off as yet. Taft Industries is probably a metaphor for some research company that lost a major contract to NASA. At any rate, people do lose their jobs during bad economic times, even though the original takes place during the bicentenial. The setting is a different era and there are many hilarious scenes...you may have to watch it a couple of times to appreciate them. What I always liked about the film is that no one takes Dick's job loss too seriously so it remains light.

i had no idea there was an older version, so when i saw tcm was gonna air this, i thought it was the new movie or something wrong with the program list, the comedy bits seemed pretty aged, so as i was watching it i figured they pretty much had to change every part as they remade it. i didn't see the whole thing, but it looked enjoyable, and worth mentioning is that it was the first time (i saw) tcm air it.

floating by the spell of madeleine,
enchanted by your magic ways,
in the dark of the night,
she lost her heavy jacket down,
good forms pop out,
and made curves come a bounce,
from a dark suit and so uptight,
she dropped that outfit down,
and walked out in the free and so light,
as if there came a beach summertime,
though it's snow and chilly outside,
nomather weather, madeleine creates any mood she likes.
