Thirty Thou!

When Dick is trying to get a job with another company and was offered thirty thousand and Jane was shaking her head up & down like that was a big offer-I was like holy cow this is what you could own back in the seventies making 30,000 a year! Look at their house, yard, a pool, a maid! This can't be right
Also think they mentioned in the movie the house was a little over $100,000.

I suspect Dick was doing a bit better than 30K when he got canned, but even at 30K, a 100K house was quite manageable. In the opening credits Dick and Jane had a smaller "starter" house originally. Then they got their bigger dream house. Say they owned the smaller house for ten years, and the market shot up a bit. It would not be a stretch to see them pulling 15k equity out when they sell. That 15k knocks the price of their new 100K house down to 85k. Say they amortize that house over 30 years, and get a very favorable mortgage rate. Their monthly payment would be in the vicinity of $400, well within the total debt service ratio of someone earning 30K per year. Even so, Dick and Jane did not save anything for a rainy day and that really messed them up.
