was the game really like that in to 1970's?? like could you check people? and the goalie had like no pads. kinda hard to believe considering every little thing you do in field hockey becomes in infraction now. and the goalies could probably take bullets from a low calibur firearm and remain unscathed.

I never played on a field hockey team, but played in PE at school during the early 1970's.

The way it's depicted in the film is how we played. The goalie had no extra equipment to wear. There wasn't as much protective gear in any sport then as there is now. People also played as rough as shown in the film, but not as obvious.
