can't believe some people prefer THIS one

Is it just nostalgia? Or just feeling that everything from "back in the day" was better? A lot of stuff in this movie was just plain bad. The newer version, while hardly an all-time classic, did a good job with it and avoided any major problems like these.

-- The scene where about 10 visitors show up one after another. The mom, Ellen, wouldn't have been able to handle all that chaos anyway. Plus it's hardly a normal day in the life of a mother. Isn't this movie supposed to be about how they wouldn't want to experience each other's everyday life?

-- Ellen-as-Annabel is clueless beyond what is believable. Yes, I know she's SUPPOSED to be confused about how to act in her daughter's life. But she keeps calling people "young lady" and never stops doing it, she has no idea that giving a class-long speech is considered unusual. I can't help but think about the poor writing when this happens.

-- The boy across the street doesn't seem ANYTHING like any human being I have ever heard of. All I could think is "why did they make him act like that? is he supposed to be mentally retarded?"

-- Very random and pointless car chase scene, and it didn't seem to have any consequences at all. Again, is starting a high speed car chase something that a girl like Annabel is supposed to do? It was amusing at least to see all the Dukes of Hazzard police cars after seeing Boss Hogg as the principal.

-- Speaking of which, I can't even begin to explain the parent/teacher/principal meeting. Very weird and hard to understand situation there.

-- When they switch back at the end, their bodies are in the wrong places. Why?

-- Probably worst of all is the climax of the movie. Let me get this straight- the dad has some random business meeting, which happens to take place on a floating raft on the water, and for some reason it's vitally important that his daughter puts on a water-skiing show? Then when the raft sinks into the water, the natural reaction of all the important business is to LAUGH?

There are just so many "WTF" moments that distract you from enjoying the movie. I don't see how anyone can prefer this when there are so many bad scenes.

On a side note, I watched this movie just because I'm a Jodie Foster fan. I don't know if it's the acting or writing or what, but I was really bored and not entertained by her scenes. Instead, Barbara Harris (the mother) was the star of the movie. She did a great job of acting like a kid, and her scenes with the boy across the street, and interacting with Annabel's brother, were the best parts of the movie. In the remake, it was the other way around, with Lindsay Lohan getting the better scenes.

The thing I love so much about this movie is that first and foremost its the ORIGINAL, that being said the new version is okay too, but I just cant give it as much love because its already been done. Same goes for the parent trap, the original is great and the new one just bores me, been there done that..
I must admit that your synopsis of the movie is actually correct which made me laugh, but I still love it. Come on the movie is supposed to be fun and silly.

While the remake with Curtis and Lohan was good and Hollywood smooth with better production values (so what), the main difference is in the lead actors. I mean you know Jodie Foster can act circles around Lindsay Lohan (who couldn't) but the main difference is in the moms. Jaime Lee Curtis is a savvy pro who has her own take on the role but it's pretty flat in comparison. Barbara Harris I didn't remember from her small roles in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Peggy Sue Got Married but now that my memory has been jogged, she did a fine job. This movie, though, is her tour-de-force. What a fantastic performance. She is flawless and incredibly funny in this role. As fine a comedic turn as anyone has ever done; the nuances of voice, the facial expressions, the slapstick - all spot on.

Jodie Foster is no slouch either. Her teenage roles have showed maturity beyond her years and a thorough understanding of her roles. She shines in this one.
The supporting cast is well chosen and they're all good too.

I can see why they remade it, though. Todays kids don't usually get into old movies so with a box office cinch like Lohan, why not? I like a lot of the 60's and 70's movies since that is my generation and subconsequently have trouble enjoying the 30's and 40's movies. But a good movie is a good movie no matter when it was made.

yea, old freaky friday sucks. remake is better, 'cause lindsay is hot.

in old FF, jodie foster is not hot. thats one more thing that makes it not cool.

c'mon! be childish, at least for an hour and a half! :-) don't count goofs, sit back and relax - it can change one's outlook at this relaxed, family comedy. it was very "liberating" for me to see this sweet and foolish flick. kinda persuaded me that things can be amusing, depending how harsh you (don't) judge them. a beautiful disney classic that I would recommend as a child's must-see.

You mentioned in your post the number one reason that I prefer this version to the remake...Ms. Barbara Harris...one of the best and most unappreciated actresses in the business. The woman is brilliant and makes this film worth watching.

this one was way better, the other one was to cheesy for me

I liked your post, chocoboat and would like to share my take on things :-)

"Is it just nostalgia? Or just feeling that everything from "back in the day" was better? A lot of stuff in this movie was just plain bad. The newer version, while hardly an all-time classic, did a good job with it and avoided any major problems like these."

Nostalgia? No, as I didn't exist when the film was released. I first saw the original FF in the 90s.

"-- The scene where about 10 visitors show up one after another. The mom, Ellen, wouldn't have been able to handle all that chaos anyway. Plus it's hardly a normal day in the life of a mother. Isn't this movie supposed to be about how they wouldn't want to experience each other's everyday life?"

I don't think the original FF ever meant to show us an ordinary day. They wanted to make it an absurd day. I imagine the filmmakers to have thought: "Hey, what about they change bodies AND have the worst days of their lives, COOL!" Orso.

"-- Ellen-as-Annabel is clueless beyond what is believable. Yes, I know she's SUPPOSED to be confused about how to act in her daughter's life. But she keeps calling people "young lady" and never stops doing it, she has no idea that giving a class-long speech is considered unusual. I can't help but think about the poor writing when this happens."

Good writing is about stereo types and great individuals. Ellen is a nice mixture of both...

"-- The boy across the street doesn't seem ANYTHING like any human being I have ever heard of. All I could think is "why did they make him act like that? is he supposed to be mentally retarded?""

Hehehe. Maybe. But probably not. Imagine seeing your friends mum in that state though. I'm not sure how I'd react! Kids from my generation (I'm 27) and younger are used to being very direct with adults, but in 1976 I think this was slightly different...

"-- Very random and pointless car chase scene, and it didn't seem to have any consequences at all. Again, is starting a high speed car chase something that a girl like Annabel is supposed to do? It was amusing at least to see all the Dukes of Hazzard police cars after seeing Boss Hogg as the principal."

The best part of silly films are silly car chase scenes. Don't take it seriously for even one second. I mean, one of the cars is sliced in two!

"-- Speaking of which, I can't even begin to explain the parent/teacher/principal meeting. Very weird and hard to understand situation there."

I found it amusing. As a kid I would've loved to do my own parent/teacher meetings.

"-- When they switch back at the end, their bodies are in the wrong places. Why?"

Because apparently that's what happens after you've changed bodies.

"-- Probably worst of all is the climax of the movie. Let me get this straight- the dad has some random business meeting, which happens to take place on a floating raft on the water, and for some reason it's vitally important that his daughter puts on a water-skiing show? Then when the raft sinks into the water, the natural reaction of all the important business is to LAUGH?"

If I were an important business man I'd laugh too. Why would I waste precious energy on getting angry?

"There are just so many "WTF" moments that distract you from enjoying the movie. I don't see how anyone can prefer this when there are so many bad scenes."

Just when you think they can't come up with another WTF moment, they do. It's what the film is based on I guess. Make this film too serious and you'd have a drama. Now who wants to see that?

Will watch the new FF at some point. But I doubt I will laugh as much as I did with the original FF... Just because I really enjoyed the absurdity of it :o)

i def think this is the best one compared to the remake...JODIE FOSTER ROCKS!!!

Well, wasnt the movie really adapted from a book? (Correct me if I'm wrong). So technically, it might not be a "remake" so to speak.

yea, old freaky friday sucks. remake is better, 'cause lindsay is hot.

I'm seriously tired of reading stupid ass posts by little obnoxious, superficial and completely media-driven teenage boys like above - who can only rate a movie's quality by how hard his little dick can get by an attractive actress. Half, no the majority of the time, the film's plot has absolutely nothing to do with looks, yet I cant ever seem to not run into irritating comments like "Well I dont like this character cause she doesnt do anything for me looks wise," SO *beep* WHAT? That's not what she's there for. Or is that only what women can find self worth in?

I've once read someone chosing a character over another, discrediting the former completely altogether, all because he thought the other was "hotter" for his taste (which I might add, ironically, is always terrible!). So if George W. Bush was hot, I guess you'd like him too? (Sorry for the disturbing images, but I needed an analogy). For once I'd like to see guys my age (hell guys period) not think with their lower instincts....

Sorry, had to rant lol

I think most everyone covered why many favor this one over the 2003 one.
Bust just incase, did anyone meantion the fact that it's Disney from the '70s?
Of course it's unusual. The whole movie is. It's a faerie tail.
It's fun.

I saw the Jamie Lee Curtis/Lohan one before seeing this,
and I enjoyed it.

But then I saw this one, and I loved it-
I think it's a lot more entertaining.
Ethel Rosenberg: History is about to crack wide open. Millenium approaches.

I like this better. I feel the re-make was very cliche, with Chad Michael Murray and all.

i loved the remake until i saw this one, now i cant believe why on earth people like the remake.

In the beginning, I think they both say "I would like to switch places with her" or something like that. In the end, they say "I want to go back".
I figure, that's the reason their bodies switch places in the end.

Another thing not mentioned is why do they switch places? In the remake, it's because of the chinese mother in the restorante who does some voodoo magic.
Maybe it was less multicultural back in the 70's :)

On the water platform, it wasn't a business meeting. It was a party/presentation of the marina his company has built.

The remake is pretty good. The thing I don't like about it is that the girls have a kind of 1990's attitude. It's like Degrassi Junior high (1985) vs Degrassi the Next generation (2001). They talk differently, act differently, have a snobbish grown-up attitude.

Don't let him piss you off; that's just what he wants! :-)

I was 9 when this movie came out, and I'm not exaggerating when I say I made my mom take me to see it THREE times in the theatre. And once was at a drive-in!! Patsy Kelly's voice blaring into our car--life didn't get much better! <LOL>

I LOVED Barbara Harris in this film, and because of it, I started viewing the whole back-catalogue of her stuff: "Family Plot," "Nashville," "Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Momma's Hung You In The Closet And I'm Feeling So Sad" (avoid that one)...I have yet to see "Grosse Point Blank," but I want to at some point...
