Who Sings Opening Song?

I know Barbara Harris was a singer. Is it her singing in the opening number, "I'd Like to Be You For a Day?" If not, who are the two ladies?

reply

I was wondering that too....I don't know if I am right but I would like to think that it was Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster. (or maybe that's just wishful thinking...) But I know Jodie sang a little bit when she was younger, and in French! (my god she's SO talented!) You can go on youtube and see her singing it.

I don't know about Barbara Harris, but the girl singing this song is definitely not Jodie Foster. Even as a young girl she had a much deeper and huskier singing voice.

I would love to find a copy of the song as an mp3. I don't suppose anyone on here who is tech savvier than me has a version of it (even a good recording from the DVD)? The song just charms the pants off me.

Disneyland Records released "I'd Like To Be You For A Day" as a 45rpm single (!!) two different times within one year: the first by The Osmonds (although Donny cannot be heard, it sounds like one of his brothers, possibly Merle, singing solo) and then again by an anonymous group of singers who did not receive a proper credit. Unfortunately, neither version is the one heard in the movie. I found both of these on eBay, they are "promo records"--meaning the same song appears on both sides of the single. It took several years for me to track these two records down.

Join the club, I also loved the song and wish I could find it available by the same ones who performed it in the movie. If anyone can locate the original version of the song from the movie,I'd like to own it.

Any audio from a CD or DVD can be recorded in real time on a PC with a DVD drive. You will also need a WAVE EDITOR program like Cool Edit Pro, Goldwave or any that you prefer.
Since the recording is from the PC's DVD drive, set the recording control of the sound card to "what you here" or "stereo mix" and adjust the level all the way up. Make sure the balance is in the middle and the "select" box is checked. This will record any sound that comes out of the PC's speakers, even streaming audio.

Insert the DVD, let it start up, then foward through all the previews to the main menu. Start the wave recording program, then start the playing of the movie.

When finished recording, stop the wave recording program, then stop the DVD. The wave file will be recorded in the directory the program has set during it's installation.

Now that you have a raw wave file it can be edited, like hard limiting the volume or clipping the start or end parts that aren't needed or compressed in mp3 format. I will not go into that. I'm sure most of you know somebody who can do this for you.

I recorded the song and it sounds great, but I had to hard limit the wave file 20 DBs because my sound card does not have great amplitude for "stereo mix".
Good Luck!

Susie Stevens-Logan, 10 years old at the time. Her vocals were multitracked, so it sometimes sounds like two females dueting....

The trivia credits Harris and Foster as singing. I find it hard to believe Foster's voice was that high pitched though, but who knows.

The FAQ answer and the trivia have two different answers.

This is why IMDB is unreliable.

I just listened to the song and it does NOT sound like one 10 year old is singing. I always assumed it was a girl and a woman singing..you know..because the movie is about a girl and a woman.

You can hear Barbara Harris sing on the OBCs of "The Apple Tree" and "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever," and on the OST of "Nashville." Her voice is exceptional!

It is NOT the same bland voice from "Freaky Friday"'s opening number.

reply

Barbara Harris is an excellent singer – just as she's an excellent actress. I didn't find the singer of the opening tune bland, but it doesn't sound like Barbara.

You don't think Jodie Foster could be that high pitched? Have you seen Bugsy Malone??
