I was reading an interview some time ago with Ridley Scott that he first wanted Oliver Reed and Michael York for the lead roles,Which with no disrepect to the other actors would have lets face it would have been a far better choice, I think they both miss out on one of the best roles of there careers.
shareYou got that right. Both York and Reed would have been better in the roles than Carradine and Keitel. The former, being British stage and film actors, would have given the film more depth and dimension.

I'm not so sure that York and Reed would have been better choices as much as I love both actors. They had both just come off of The Three Musketeers and I think that would have changed the flavor of the movie. I love this movie exactly the way it is.
