I'm not sure if it's out of print and being reissued, or making the jump to Blu-Ray, or what...all I know is that it's next to impossible to obtain the film. The Borders outlets in my state (Ohio) don't even have it in their catelogues, while the FYE I consulted doesn't even have a record of its being on DVD...just laserdisc. The few brand-new copies available on Amazon are far from being reasonably-priced.
What gives? There are far more obscure films with much greater ubiquitousness than this gem. Does anybody know anything? Have any of you experienced similar hardship trying to track it down? My quest now has added zeal.

For all interested parties, I bit the bullet and shelled out $20 ($23 after S&H) for a brand new, factory-sealed DVD. That's a little steep, but it's approximately the cost of new releases, and I figured this exquisite film (OOP no less) is better than most, if not all, of those. I think it was worth it.
I payed attention to the fluctuating prices for months, and that was the cheapest it went down to. It's currently a bit pricier, but in the same ballpark.
I now face the dilemma of badly wanting to watch the film, but opposed to the opening, and thus "tainting", of it.

It is interesting to note that the original post in May 2010 lamented that the DVD was almost extinct and could not be found in Borders. Now Borders is extinct and the DVD is widely available. As at 20 Jan 2013 it can be bought in Australia for $4.99 (US $5.25). Art triumphs over corporate behemoths!
I don't know about "widely available", but it's certainly been relatively expensive, as DVDs go. I've had it bookmarked on Amazon for years, and some prices for a new disk have been $90 or more. There are used copies for much less, naturally, but I've found that it's been hard to find, and generally expensive.
