Films like this, make me yearn for the aforementioned. Because back then film directors were limited by what special effects were capable of. This made some of them use their creativety and imagination more effectively. Now, it's far too easy, especially when they have large budgets, for filmmakers to just run riot with set-pieces, which don't further the story at all.

That's too true but viewers have to shoulder some responsibility too.
I watched A tale of two cities again a couple of days ago and it took me quite a lot of building up to make myself watch it! In the end I found it enjoyable and as moving as the first time I saw it but I thought the effects, cameras, acting and yes even the Black and White would make it boring. It's not just film makers who need imagination but also the people who watch the films, I really do find it an insult when they put so much effort into special effects but when I look around the cinema and see people really getting into transformers(2007) I guess I realise it's not all the makers fault!
I really enjoyed 300 because it sort of went the other way- I know people who liked transformers complain that 300 wasn't realistic enough!!! WTF?
