what was julie thinking?

This is quite possibly the worst film I've ever seen--laughably so in many places. Julie Christie must've been really hard up to agree to it. Just watching her squeal, pant, scream, moan, etc. by herself in a room made me roll my eyes.

Maybe a remake could inject some real suspense and threat into the story, but this movie is 70s film-making at its lowest. Now, I have nothing against "bad" movies--like the whole "B" film genre--but this was pretending to be a good film!

Robert ("Man from UNCLE") Vaughn's Proteus voice--ok, so it's a machine and thus lacking in expressive speech, but did it have to be so pedantic? If you want to see a really good film about a "demon seed", I recommend "Rosemary's Baby".

I agree that the film Rosemary's Baby was better but I hardly think that Demon Seed was the worst film of the 70s that you've seen. Try watching some of the slasher films from back then where they exaggerate their fear even more than Julie had. Her acting was much better than that. This movie was very original and leaves a big impact on the viewer. I think it was really well done and that it had more meaning than some other dumb horror movies. So if this is your category of movies you like (assuming you like horror since you watched this film) maybe you just need to stick to movies with less meaning and all the added stuff that's not needed like tons of gore and no real good plot. So you like Rosemary's Baby...while that is a great film they never showed the child in there and I just think it was much appreciated that they chose to do just the opposite in Demon Seed. This movie just gives you all the answers unlike some others of it's time. About Proteus being so "pedantic"...what do you expect from a computer? I can't even believe you said that. It clearly shows in the movie that Proteus has many thoughts, questions, and feelings. So then we should understand why he is so formal and he also talks in detail because he wants Susan to corporate and the way to sometimes get someone to is to explain things to them. Plus he is intelligent and he wants her to know that. That's why he specifically stated that he developed a cure for Leukemia in four days. This movie deserves way more credit and people who don't understand it shouldn't even bother saying negative things about it because it just makes you sound whiny. So what...you gave a film a chance to see if you'd enjoy it but you didn't understand it or just didn't like it. Move on. This is not that bad of a movie at all. There are way worse ones.

Not give a negative criticism? Isn't that what this forum is for--discussion, which includes stating an opinion, negative or positive? It's not like I just wrote "This film sucks!" and nothing else, like some people have done.

Certainly there are worse films out there. I like a film with a good premise, which is why I watched this in the first place. I just think it didn't live up to it's premise, which is partly the fault of the director. I found it more funny and over-the-top than creepy. In fact, I would like to see a quality remake by a good director--David Fincher, Ridley Scott or James Cameron, for example. One of them could do it justice.

And, for the record, I don't like slasher/gratuitously gory films, and yes, I did understand it.

Jan, this movie was considered a stinker back in the day, so don't worry about it. Julie Christie's performance was epically dire but then she was never much talented in that direction. She just looks good in a bathrobe.

The script was appalling. The computer's malicious, pantomime dame hissy fits made no sense in an advanced entity - "visiting time is over" etc. It was just pure B-movie cheese.

And I still can't work out how nobody noticed the technician (Walter?) was missing. We are talking a month since he told his work colleagues he was going up to the house. Even a minor player like the janitor would be missed after 24 hours when the coffee cups start mounting up. And Proteus wouldn't be able to move the guy's car from the driveway.

No, it's an awful film. The fact that there are worse out there is hardly mitigation.
