Why did Proteus make use of the radio telescopes and direct it towards Orion? Was he trying to communicate with aliens? Is that what's implied in the film?

It was, I believe, looking for and found the afterlife.

It was simply a distraction for the authorities at Icon whilst he fathered his baby with Susan.
