Why 'The Deep' is called what it is
I have a better explanation of the name of this movie. In the British Virgin Islands, there is a certain wreck offshore called the 'Rhone'. Remember the famous scene where she emerges from the hatch with her white shirt on? That, in fact, was not anywhere near Bermuda, where the movie takes place. I was vacationing there a week or 2 ago, and I got the chance to dive on the Rhone. The reason that this movie is called "The Deep" is because they may have took into consideration that the Rhone is 85 feet deep. The real story of the Rhone is a while back, the Rhone was about to dock, but the barometer dropped and would not stop dropping. They decided to wait next to Salt Pond Island and wait the storm out. Not a good idea. Another passing ship which had passengers, unlike the Rhone, which had only cargo, was not as big as the Rhone. Because of this, the passenger ship loaded their crew onto the Rhone. The Rhone was a large ship using breakthrough technology at the time. After they had gotten aboard, the hurricane hit hard. Before the ship sank, farmers living in Salt Pond Island saw that the ship was in distress. They then tied themselves to the land (literally) and went to save the passengers and crew aboard. Sadly, they could not. The crew tied the passengers up to stop them from getting in the way (strangely). Because of this brave act, the Queen of England at the time told the residents on Salt Pond Island that they were exempt from any taxes, and only had to give a pound of salt per family a year as tax. In 1995, the last living descendant gave the Queen a pound of salt from one of the dead families. Now, any certified diver can dive this wreck.
