Three deleted scenes

I seem to remember three scenes from the movie's initil release that have since been deleted from subsequent TV, video, and DVD offerings. Just wondering if anybody else recalls these as well....

The beginning of the movie starts with an aerial view of Bermuda, pans out to the ocean, and then we see David and Gail scuba diving,......

...but the first time I saw the movie it started with the storm that sunk The Goliath and showed a young boy finding the wreck's lone survivor washed up on the beach. (It is later revealed through dialogue that the boy was Romer Treece and the survivor was Adam Coffin)

Secondly, as David and Treece come to Gail's rescue at the hotel, we see David's fight with a bad guy aboard the beach elevator,......

....but in the original version there is a scene showing Treece tangling with one of Cloche's goons outside the hotel. They are on a lawn, I believe, and Treece dispatches the bad guy by using a garden hose or something, twirling it around and then using it to snag the bag guy's feet, yanking them out from beneath him. He then knocks the guy out with a punch or kick.

Finally, the original version had a scene between Coffin and Gail aboard Treece's boat while David and Treece are diving. Coffin tells Gail (dialogue which was in the novel) about how Treece's wife died because of a drug dealer, and how the dealer in question was subsequently found stuffed in a tree....with every joint in his body twisted and busted in the wrong direction! He never comes right out and says that Treece did it, but it is strongly insinuated.

I only saw that scene the first time I saw the movie and it has been deleted ever since.

Does anybody else remember these scenes?

This was obviously the TV version that you saw. For an hour of footage being put back into the film, those are only three scenes, there must have been more. So please, do tell what ELSE was in the film originally. This was again, the TV version you saw, as those scenes are not present in the original THEATRICAL version.
ANYBODY HAVE IT TAPED?

reply

Yes, I saw that version (with the three scenes) when the movie premiered on television. I had never seen it in the theater, so I had no idea those scenes were not shown in the theatrical version. Thanks for the info.

Those are the only scenes I can remember. It was a long time ago, after all.

I remember the scenes vividly because....

....the scene with young Treece finding Coffin half dead on the beach was filmed to be revealed in a startling way.....

....the scene with Treece dispatching one of Cloche's goons outside of the hotel was something my friends and I talked about the next day because we thought Treece did it in a cool way....

....and the scene between Gail and Coffin was memorable (more so after reading the book a few years later) because the dialogue about Treece's wife, her death, and what happened to the drug dealer involved showed exactly what a tough s.o.b. Treece could be if you got on his wrong side.

Also, when I first saw the movie on TV it was so long that it was split into two parts and shown on successive nights.

Interesting. That is what they did alot with movies back in the day. They showed them on two nights for a big event type thing.

Those scenes sound like they were cool!

I've never heard that these scenes were cut, and now that i do, it i need to make it my life's ambition to see the film with these parts in it.

Supposedly, TBS and TNT(part of the Turner conglomerate down Atlanta, GA way), used to air this long, made-for-television version years ago(c. 5 years and counting). Maybe if enuf people email The Turner Network, we just might get to see all of this interesting footage. According To Mr. Douglas Pratt, who publishes a fine monthly newsletter entitled, "The DVD/Laserdisc Newsletter", this extended version was originally intended for release on laserdisc back in 1995. But for some unknown reason, it was withdrawn for release. Just around that time, Sony took over Columbia/Tristar(the original licensees of this film). From what I gather, Sony isn't much on DVD extras. We all can only place this obscurity on our wish lists. Robert Shaw was a true character actor. It was as if he lived and breathed each role that he took on(Ex. "The Sting", "Jaws", "The Deep"). What a loss. Take Care, and thanks for your information.

reply

Yes, thanks for this information. I had no idea any of these scenes exsted!

Check out the 3 Hour Version Laserdisc post on this message board as there is an explaination why Columbia scrapped plans on releasing the extended version of the film back in 1995.

Wow. Been a long time since any one responded to this post. Well, I eventually got my hands on the 3 hour TV version. Really cool. Peace.
