I don't even care if he is somewhat of a variation of the Quint character, Shaw's Romer Treece is a badass. A little eccentric and a little crazy; nevertheless he is a man dedicated to his work and holds some real honor. Well done to the late mr. Shaw.
shareyes--and I liked the way the relationship with Nolte and Bisset changes from the first meeting, where Treece says 'you've not been asked for lunch'; and it turns into a historical detective story. A good movie. Odd and sad how Shaw died not long after the movie came out.

shareHe's great it, no doubt. Thoroughly entertaining. And really, I don't find him to be all that similar to Quint, apart from being a seaman. Treece is much more refined and sophisticated.
And I love the competitiveness between him and Nolte. From what I understand, that is very much like the real Shaw. There's a hilarious scene where Treece offers Nolte some rum, which Nolte very enthusiastically accepts. Treece then responds, "Oh, well I never drink before I dive." Love that stuff!
I thought his character was extremely different than Quint other than the fact he's a PB creation and works in the ocean.

This film might not be as good as 'Jaws' but I reckon Robert Shaw's character is more interesting than Quint. I liked Eli Wallach's old seadog character as well.

Early on (first encounter, pinching the glass vial) he was coming across as a dubious con-man. An eccentric. However he showcases himself as a man of strong morals and virtues latter on.
