Wish Spielburg still made movies like this.

This and jaws have so many flaws but to me are perfect.
This is my favourite.

Yeah I think it's kinda like how bands write their best stuff in the early days. Back when they were hungry and had something to prove.

Spielberg says that to this day, nothing has been more challenging than putting together the last act of CE3K. So I'm like ... well dig deep man! Let's see your best again!

CGI and green screens make scenes like this so much easier to shoot these days and sadly they might look more realistic when done well but they also feel soulless.

I too wish Spielberg would make films like this again. I think his best movies were from his early days. All my favourites are Duel, Jaws, Close Encounters, Raiders of the Lost Ark and E.T. I think the fact he was not recognised by the Acadmey for E.T. meant we went on a quest to please the Academy by directing far more adult oriented material like The Colour Purple, Empire of the Sun etc. and the sci-fi and adventure movies were directed by others and he only acted as a producer. When he finally went back to sci-fi, the results have not been as satisfying as they are all quite average and not as rewatchable as his earlier ones. Minority Report probably being the best of the average bunch out of A.I. and War of the Worlds.

I hope (though I very much doubt he will) that he rediscovers his mojo for the new Indy film.

People tend to be more creative in their younger years- look at Mozart! I don't think Spielberg will ever get back to his 70s/80s best, you'd be more likely to get a classic from a young up and coming director now.

Agreed. Close Encounters and Jaws continue to be favourite films of mine just like Alien and Blade Runner are from Ridley Scott. George Lucas is another one who seemingly did his best work when he was young. It's a strange pattern.

He's too busy with things like West Side Story and The Fabelmans.

Box office bombs? Acclaimed yes, but still flops. Wish he did that Blackhawk movie for DC when it was first announced.
