Best acting performance
The best acting performance comes from the one who's not portraying the role of a soldier- Sir Laurence Olivier (as the doctor).

shareEdward Fox.

Anthony Hopkins. He doesn't have to say anything in the terrific scene where Maximillian Schell offers him the chocolate.

Agreed with robertgroves - Anthony Hopkins
shareThe best acting: Anthony Hopkins and Hardy Krüger
The most fun: Edward Fox and Elliot Gould
The most overrated: James Caan
The most underrated: Sean Connery
Honorable mention: Siem Vroom
I would also like to say that Ryan O'Neal does not deserve the bashing he takes for this role. Brigadier General Gavin was a relatively young guy.
Robert Redford was not so good. He came off a bit too Hollywood here.
Edward Fox
"I like to see us like one of those American western movies"
Hopkins stole the show for me.

"I'm vilifying you for God's sake - pay attention!"
Fox or Hopkins.
"Some men will say we are traitors. Some will say we're patriots. Both will be wrong."
I can recall that there was a buzz that Edward Fox was being considered for a best supporting actor Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Gen. Horrocks (didn't happen).
shareI thought he got a BAFTA nomination, I could be mistaken.
I read somewhere that Fox considered his portrayal of Horrocks to be his best film performance. I wouldn't go THAT far but he's really impressive for the little screen time he has.

/Aside from the fact that Horrocks looked a little older than him (the guy didnt age well, stress of military life do doubt), he wasnt too much younger in reality. JOE thought Fox was spot on in the briefing scene. IMO he was excellent./
Horrocks was a POW during WWI and was gravely injured during WWII. I also read that his wife was abusive. Physically? Not sure but maybe.

I think Edward Fox and Anthony Hopkins were among the best. Sean Connery was very good also. I enjoyed most all of the performances in the movie.
Frank: Just a man.
Harmonica: An ancient race.
In a film full of great performances, it's Anthony Hopkins, hands down.
share1. Hopkins
2. Connery
3. Fox
4. Olivier
5. Caan
