Playboy magazines Carmen steals

Assuming this movie is set in June, 1977 (which it probably was, one summer after the original), the Playboy magazines Carmen gets from the convinience store near the hotel they stay in the first night would have been the July, 1977 issues. I know that because I've looked at and read Playboy since the early 1980s regularly, and every month the next chronological month's issue is in stores, or delivered by mail. This issue would also be signifigant for me, in that it was the first one I ever saw, and its centerfold (or Playmate) was the first nude woman I ever saw. This was because my family was visiting our relatives that month near Washington, D.C., and my cousin's friends who lived near there had this Playboy issue stashed outside in the bushes near the houses, and they got it out and we all looked at it when outside one afternoon. It was apparently one of their father's issues that they'd sneaked out of their house, and I really liked it, and went back out alone that night after dark to try and get/look at it again, but couldn't find it in the bushes (and never did again). I, and most if not all of them, were 9 then, and were rising 4th graders, which was a little younger than most of the Bears players in this movie (who were probably 10, 11, 12, and had just finished 4th, 5th, 6th grades-and about the same age as Lex,below-though I'm sure she never played Little League baseball). But in the scene where Carmen brings them back to the hotel room he interrupts a pillow fight with the offer of these magazines, to which the other Bears players (except Kelly, who'd left the room) immidiently forget the fight and begin looking at them. As to how he got them to begin with, that is never made clear, he tries to buy one with some other items, but the clerk refuses because he is under 21 (the legal age was/is really 18 for this, I'm pretty sure), then it shows him returning to the hotel with three, but whay I've always thought happened was that he went to put the one back while leaving the other items on the counter to be rang up, the just grabbed two more and ran out. I did show this scene to my mother once, and she then asked how'd he get them. I then explained it was never mentioned again, and she said, "He must've stole them." I then explained what I just wrote, which I'm pretty certain is true.

The Playboys in the movie are the February,1977 issue. I also believe that Carmen stole them.

I don't think he stole them, I just think he kept convincing that guy to let him buy the playboy until the clerk gave in.

He comes in the hotel room with them under his jacket. I always assumed he stole them too.

He definitely stole them. His strategy was to walk boldly up to the counter with one copy in hand, with more copies tucked into his newspaper. The clerk refused to sell him the one copy, and thinking Carmen was just a bold kid -- not a thief -- he didn't even bother to shake out the newspaper.

This is pretty simple, folks. Carmen says to the clerk, "When you're 21 you've been there and back.. How do they expect us young guys to learn anything?" The clerk says "Really I don't."

Two scenarios would make sense. One, the clerk sells him the mags but tells him if he gets caught, the clerk would claim he stole them, or two, Carmen used his east coast salesmanship to convince the clerk.

Wow I posted that almost two years ago.
Now I think he did steal them, because he had three. So it would've made sense if he just hid more under his jacket while trying to convince the clerk, when for awhile I thought it meant after the clerk turned him down he went back and stole them.

But now it makes sense that he just stuck 3 in his jacket.

I just read your post for the first time and I want to thank you. I believe that you and the other posters are correct about the three Playboy sceenerio. It's the key to the mystery.
Thanks for posting this question. I have wonderd about this for many years.

Interesting point. Its so funny that you just commented because the other day I was thinking about this scene from the movie. I made this post a good amount of time ago.

Nudie magazines were very popular before there was free porn on the internet. '70s Playboy is probably tame compared to what is available now.

there's a mystery and specialness that playboy penthouse and other magazines before about 10 years ago had that online porn has never had and never will. it's that you don't see sex in any magazines like playboy. and also, it's because people saw and talked about playboy magazine before about 10 years ago, whereas online porn videos aren't talked about because they're so available and so prevalent, they are everywhere.

such a beautiful story. i did a similar thing i took my sister's friends madonna's sex book from the garage in a storage box to the side of the garage outside, under a bush to hide it. i still can remember the first time i ever really looked at a playboy magazine, meaning looked at a nude girl in a playboy magazine. my friend's dad had a lot of them in a cardboard box. i felt really dirty and guilty and sinful looking at a nude girl picture. that was one of those epic moments in life, you know what i mean? it was a coming of age moment. when i watched this scene i thought movies back in the '70s always had a shot of a playboy magazine. playboy was so big popular and epic in the '70s that's why so many movies in the '70s have a playboy shown in them.
