Perhaps Buttermaker, got his act together and went into AA and got cleaned up. He became part of Amanda life. Just my thought.
shareAs the matter of fact, I remember reading the novelization back in the 70's where it mentioned on the first page that Buttermaker had (finally) married Amanda's mom and moved the family to another state so you're not far wrong!
