To the real basbeall geeks out there

First, I'd like to say this movie was one of my favorites as kid. However, I always laughed profusely (and still do) at how the lineup didn't add up at all. How does Kelly bat 3 times in 4 innings? Why are the Bears automatically back to their 2, 3, 4 hitters in the 3rd when they didn't even bat through the lineup yet?

My main question though: Carmen bats for the first time in the 4th inning (hilarious)… How would you score his game winning hit? It's definitely not a grand-slam (even though 4 runs score), but what is it?

reply

i noticed that also about the batting order.

as far as scoring the game winning hit, i think it would be a double, Error on throw to third.

3 rbi's i think would officially count.

reply

Yea, also when the umpire picks up the pitching rubber and just drops it in front of the real pitching mound, no measuring or anything. Also how many times did carmen stop on the base paths after he hit that ball? I love this movie but it didnt make sense.

Do pitchers still get to bat in Little League? I heard use of the designated hitter was become very widespread.

reply

I think everyone bats in little league.. doubt they'd be pigeonholing kids that young into any one specific position.. but you never know

Or the hidden ball trick. That whole play was so illegal.

and when the tubby kid hits a fly ball to rf---the guy on 3rd doesn't even tag up & try to score?

The way they did the hidden ball trick, yeah, balk all day. When done right, it's a great play. My team used to do it all the time. Also, to my recollection, leading off the base is illegal in little league. I was playing LL back when these movies were released and you couldn't leave the base until the pitched ball reached the catcher.

Yes, leading off has never been legal in little league or bambino(another 11,12 yr old league that's played around the country). Or at least since the 80's when I played.

It's funny tho because all the things that were pointed out in this thread are such obvious F ups by the screenwriters or whomever makes these kind of decisions. I mean if there was ever a baseball geek it's me, but those things never stood out to me until I read this topic. I still like the movie at 38 yrs old and watch it anytime I see it on TV but those things are kind of hard to overlook

It's really surprising to me that of all the people involved in making this movie no one spoke up and said, " you know, leading off is illegal in little league, the hidden ball trick was illegal the way it was done and if a guy leaves the bag without tagging on a fly ball he will be ruled out on an appeal....we are making a baseball movie so it needs to be realistic".

These things I don't see how they got overlooked.
