Saw a reprint of this fabulous film tonight and was surprised by quite a few things that seemed very David Lynch/Twin Peaks: the forger wore an eye patch, Hopper stands by some heavy red satin drapes which he draws apart to enter another room, even Dennis Hopper himself!
Anyone know whether David Lynch references this film anywhere as an influence?

shareI thought the house where Ripley stayed had a very Blue Velvet feel -- but considering the chronology of the movies, you'd have to say Lynch used Wendersian undertones. I recommend Paris, Texas if you haven't seen it yet.

shareyeah... when this came out, lynch was still holed up making eraserhead for 9 years. i think wenders had that great combination of classic cinema + skewed social perception, and that put him in the same territory as late-80's lynch before lynch was even there.
don't get me wrong, i love lynch, but there's no social reconciliation for his work. it's entirely anachronistic material.
ive always noticed the similiarities between Wenders and Lynch, and even some of Jim Jarmuschs work has a bit of a Wenders/Lynch feel to it, Dead Man in particular, but even some of his very ealy work like Stranger than Paradise or Permanent Vacation id say leans a bit towards Wim Wenders influence.

Curiously enough, there's another similarity the OP didn't notice, both directors have used Edward Hopper's paintings as a visual inspiration.
shareI'm a big lynch fan and I didn't see any overt siilarities between this and any lynch film. I didn't care for this movie (or Ripley's game) but I did like bruno ganz's performance. any lynch film I have seen was much better than this to me(except eraserhead).

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed it. None of the similarities were too heavy, but they showed themselves in subtle ways. It creeps up in certain shots and certain bits of dialogue.
