Why were all of the nuns clothes covered with blood throughout the whole movie, especially concentrated around their privates? I know there was the one scene where the nun was crying and sweating blood, but it doesn't explain much. I don't know anything about Spanish religious culture or anything, and i couldn't find anything of use on google.
shareApparently flagellation was part of their religious practice, and in the one scene of flagellation in the film there was blood drawn.
Later in the film it may have been at least partly the work of -- could it be? -- Satan.

Based on the location of a lot of the blood (if that's what it is) I would be tempted to guess it was menstrual.
