The laughter just seemed to fade....

You could tell. In the earlier episodes, the audience seemed to be living it up,while in the episodes during the last couple of seasons, things seemed kind of dim. Don't know if it was a new generation, tired old jokes, same story lines, or a little of everything.

"Duh. You're the idiot. Not me."

I completely agree. The show gets older, new characters, new story lines etc. yeah the funny isn't as funny from when it was new and fresh. Once Lana joined there humor kinda down hill but still fun and funny to watch.

The seventh season is when I can start to tell a difference. They made Jack more the main character with Janet as his sidekick, and Terri almost a walk-on at times. The characters had lost their camaraderie and innocence somewhat.

reply

They were just going through the motions at this point. Alot of it was still funny.. but forced.

reply

By the seventh and eighth seasons it was more so polite laughter. They were prepping Jack up for Three's a Crowd and eventually settling down with Vicky. Jack had his own restaurant by now and responsibilities, had to slow down his wild ways so the laughter slowed down, too.

The laughter didn't fade. The times changed. The 1980s was lot more conservative and uptight than the freewheeling 1970s, so the tone of the show and the audience became very subdued. You can even see it in the clothes everyone wears. As the show progressed, everyone's hair and clothing became so frumpy--no more lounging in overalls and jeans. Everyone's in suit and ties or in dowdy dresses.

There was no significant different in the times because we hit the year 1980. I would have remembered. The 80's were just as casual and freewheeling.

reply

I'm not so sure a suit and tie is more frumpy than overalls, but there was less skin showing in the 80's. A problem with the show was they were trying to do something that worked at one point in a different time. What works for anybody just a few years ago wouldn't work today. The characters needed to get into serious relationships earlier on than they did, move to a different location or just end the series earlier. A family show can run longer with less changes because their characters age. The characters in this series werre no diffetent in season 8 than they were in season 1, save for worse haircuts, less believability and a roommate and landlord change.

reply

The laughter almost seemed forced in the last seasons. The show got so dull by then.

reply

There was a lot of backstage tensions going on back then which is probably a contribution to the later results of the show. Priscilla Barnes admitted working on the show was a low point of her career. The backstage atmosphere was too uncomfortable for her.

What?? Seasons 6 to 8 had some of the best episodes of the series! In the first few seasons Chrissy's dumb blonde act was getting OLD!!

Jesus NEVER existed! He is Judeo Christian MYTH!

reply

Seasons 1, 2 and 3 were the best.

reply

Yeah, Chrissy was getting old, that's why the show was #1 in the ratings or whatever. Some people.

reply

My Uncle still has the famous Chrissy poster on his wall. He is pissed that she left to this day.

reply

Watching seasons 1 and 2 right now, and I forgot how laugh out loud the show is in its beginning. There's a good laugh per episode. Later in the series, it's numerous eye rolls and channel changing.

reply

I still laugh at the same jokes every time even though I know they are coming. That says something for the writing and characterizations in the beginning. The Roper years were some great TV.

reply

wrong. go watch "The Charming Stranger" from season 8. one of the biggest laughs of the series

reply

Yeah, my opinion is wrong.

reply

completely wrong

That's only because John Ritter flashed his testicles in that episode. 😂
