Was there actually a snake?

In the episode 'poison'. Harry is laying in a bed very still and awake. He is very frightened because a snake is on his chest, which is covered by the bedsheet. He cannot move because disturbing the snake might cause it to bite him.
Was Harry lying about the snake? as no snake was revealed when the bedsheet was removed and no snake seen anywhere in the room.

I don't think Harry was deliberately lying about there being a snake in the bed. The implication seems to be that he was dreaming or imagining things.

I think Roald Dahl mentions in the intro that the snake is imagined as a result of the character's alcohol problem, and the bite at the end is a metaphor for him pouring himself another.
