Did he survive the 'dip in the Pool?'

In the first series, there is an episode called Dip in the Pool; in which a gambler Mr Botibol ends up in the ocean. Do you think he survived?
A point to note is in the second series he makes an appearance in the episode Mr Botibol's, First Love.

So, did he survive or perhaps the occurrences in the second series episode happened prior to the episode Dip in the Pool.

In the original short stories it's fairly obvious they are not the same person - Roald Dahl just chose to give them the same unusual surname. (The guy in "Dip in the Pool" is married, whereas the guy in "Mr Botibol's First Love" is a lonely bachelor.)

But for some reason the producers of the TV show chose to cast the same actor in both episodes, implying that it is the same character.
