Rooting for someone who won't make it in the end

I have now watched a couple of episodes, and to my shock, they ended very unhappily indeed.

What's the point of watching a show where the ones you root for never make it? It's not giving the viewer the reward or satisfaction of not wasting his time for rooting the character.

I mean, how can you care about any character, if you know they are just going to be mutilated in the last few minutes, after trying to escape Nazis the whole duration of the episode?

If you know no one is ever going to make it, it's pointless to even get interested about rooting for someone. You are just going to be like "Yeah, he's going to get shot/caught/whatever", and then it becomes completely pointless to even watch this.

Do people enjoy depressing endings, or why do the denizens of this planet worship all the darkness and horror they can get their hands on? (Why even make a show about WARs anyway? Isn't that quite sick, when you think about it?)

I mean, realism is fine, and the 'not-always-a-happy-ending' is sort of fine, too (though I do like to get rewarded for my (otherwise wasted) time by giving me the satisfaction and payoff in the end, even if dramatic things happen during the show), but this show is just showing depressing things happening while tension is being kept up, and lulling people in false hope, just to shove it in the viewer's face, like a spoiled kid suddenly jumping into your living room and saying "NYAH nyah, got ya!"

I mean, what the f? What's wrong with people? I seem to be the only one thinking in this manner, but I am not going to praise something just because a million flies praise it.

I do prefer the uplifting tone of 'Allo 'Allo, at least it gives you a good comedic balance amidst all the dramatic happenings, and has a better atmosphere and feeling (the 1980s was a much better time for atmosphere than the gloomy seventies).

This show does have its good points, and it's easy to get immersed by the storylines and all, but that continuous over-seriousness, darkness and humourlessness, almost fear-based constant tension just becomes a heavy burden on the viewer, and making yourself 'undepressed' after a dose of this show is hard work.

If people lose all hope in life or commit suicides because of this show, I don't blame them. Give us at least a happy ending every now and then for some kind of balance!

But as I said, I have only watched a couple of episodes - perhaps there will be happier episodes amidst all the 'let's wallow in fear, horror and failure for the duration of the show'-attitude.

Really - why do people love wars and worship horror and depression? I just don't get it. That's not normal for human beings in my opinion - then again, I am not sure Earth denizens ARE human beings..
