In the 1980 hiatus when they didn't know if SCTV was dead I've read that they filmed a pilot for a series called "From Cleveland" or something with the duo of Bob and Ray.

That's funny. The fact that you know how to find this site and know about SCTV means you can't be unaware of Bob and Ray...only two of the funniest guys from the 1950s thru about the time SCTV premiered. Except B&R were primarily radio comedians, although they had a TV show for a few years in the '50s.
Bob Elliot is the father of Chris Elliot and the grandfather of Abbey Elliot, currently a cast member on SNL.
One of his characters, Tex Blaisdel was an inspiration for Dave Thomas' Tex Boil.
Of course there's Google for the truly unenlightened.
