Does it really count when...
Alex Haley plagiarized most of his family's "biography" from a goddamned novel?!

shareWow. An interesting conundrum
shareI don't know about that but Roots itself is a novel. It's fiction. I worked in a bookstore and it is clearly labeled as fiction.
shareIt purports to be based on the family geneaology Alex Haley clailms to have unearthed. This is how it was marketed in 1977. Many lawsuits later, Roots might be regarded as fiction now but not when it was released.
shareThe author originally claimed that it was the story of his ancestors but he plagiarized a couple parts of the story and there wasn't really much evidence of his ancestry.
