did the captain sleep w the wench
Or not??
shareEither I missed something, or you did. Not sure which. I thought the wench that Slater brought to the Captain was Fanta. Then in the next scene, she told Kunta that she was no longer a Mandika maiden.
The sad truth is that the vast majority of men in the world will not pass up such an opportunity when he has a young woman 100% in his power. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Doesn't matter how high born, or how Christian he may have been. Just human nature.
Ahhhh ty
shareI don't know if he slept with her or not but it wasn't Fanta...
The girl taken to the Captain was the one who jumped overboard when she was being chased by one of the crew members.
Here's to those who wish me well...
Sounds like you remember better than I do. My mind's gone to failing me again. In any case, I got the impression he did succumb to the temptation. His character was never quite the same after that scene, which is probably because he succumbed to the temptation. The actor did a very good job with that role.

Perhaps some guilt, but I more got the impression that after that he thought much less of himself. Through his faith, and due to his upbringing and his position of command, he thought himself above such things. But after he succumbed to such temptations he found he was truly weak. Didn't carry himself the same way after that. An interesting character transformation, and Asner did a spectacular job. One of many great performances in 'Roots'.
My personal favorite is Madge Sinclair. During her scenes, you simply cannot take your eyes off of her. Such a powerful presence, even when portraying a slave. She is a magnificent actress. The scene where she goads Toby into trying to walk after his foot is partially amuputated is, in my opinion, the best scene of the entire series.

I also got the impression that he slept with the wench. That's why he seemed like a different person afterwards. Sleeping with wenches will corrupt a good Christian mind.

I am under the assumption that he did and hated himself for doing so.
shareI thought the scene was left open so that audiences could interpret what they wanted, perhaps in the book explains whether he slept with her or not.
Ed Asner did a great job. Actually, everybody did a great job in this movie, not one bad actor in the bunch. I didn't know how much I could be repulsed by Mr. Daddy Walton himself (Ralph Waite, the belly-warmer fan).

It was a long voyage back to America. The captain would have slept with every black woman by the time they returned to America
