I'm sorry but watching that's scene was cringe worthy for me because when Kunta reunited with his long lost love Maggie after escaping I think it was Maggies/Fanta fault that Kunta got caught. They were so friggin loud when they reunionited in that barn yard debating on should she escape with him or not. When they realised that the slave catcher/slave owners overheard them Fanta acted all shocked when in reality she was loud as hell !
Yes she was loud, but not because she was trying to get him caught. She got loud not realizing she would be heard, but was trying to get through to him why she was not going to escape with him. When she opened the barn and saw her master outside, she knew that it was bad news and that Toby was going to be caught and hurt, thats why she cried and felt his pain. She had probably seen this happen before to other slaves that tried to escape.
Kunta and Fanta were never in love. In The Gambia, they're meeting was brief as you may remember that Kunta was on the prowl of a bird as part of his manhood training assignment. Though they looked at each longely, nothing really came out of their chance meeting.
Next Kunta sees that she's been captured too when he notices her on the ship, but she even stated then when Kunta brought it up she didn't want to fight. By the time they were sold off and Kunta found her again, it was apparent she had sadly accepted her new way of life, because she wanted to live.
And that's fine! But I felt that Kunta put way too much effort in trying to convince Fanta to leave with him. Especially after so much time that had passed since they left Africa. As for her being loud, that just couldn't be helped due to the emotional toll of the conversation and where it was going. I don't believe that she delibertly tried to get Kunta noticed and caught.
When life gives you lemons, make apple juice and let the world figure out how you did it!
Twelve years had passed since Kunta had seen Maggie/Fanta. He was trying so hard to get her to go with him because she was from his country and was like him. They both had started out life as free men and women. He knew she was the only one that knew what being free meant. The other men and women on the plantations would never understand and have the strong feeling of escaping and wanting to be free. They had been born slaves and held in bondage and that is all that they had known all their lives. Maggie tried to tell him as best as she could that she had been broken down by slavery and had to forget about the old ways and how things had been in Africa in order to survive in the present.
I agree. Kunta was born a free African man and he was never going to accept being a slave. Only when Kizzy was born did he decide to stop trying to escape, but in his mind he was never going to accept being a slave, no matter what his circumstance was.
