What was Toby trying to accomplish?

Mister Ames keeps asking him "What's your name?" Toby answers "Kunta" and a whip lands on his back. Toby must have realized that they weren't going to stop whipping him until he told them his name. So why prolong it? What was Toby trying to accomplish by continually saying "Kunta"?

It was a way to hold on to the last vestiges of his dignity or self respect. It is not too much different (in outcome) than those tortured or put to death when told to renounce there God.

Every third person who complains will be shot. Two people have complained already!

He was holding onto to his identity as a fee person. Accepting his slave name , meant relinquishing his freedom.

It's called defiance and not immediately giving in like a weakling, this man refused to just roll over and be anyone's bitch, thats a real man who had pride and loved being a free man.

The act of refusal shows he is not just going to be another slave, it's his way of saying "no matter what you do I am not your slave" and the will to keep fighting.

"Always two there are , a master and an apprentice"

@A1nut: Not to be nasty but the fact that you're calling him "Toby" indicates that you completely missed the point of this entire series.

He was holding out hope that the whip would break, but unfortunately for him, it never did so he had to finally give in
