The Capri is a beautiful car and very timeless. The RS2000 is a souped up box. Design wise it comes a close second to the 70s Lada. Both were not exactly high tech cars in their days. However, the Capri is actually a bit of a road toad to be honest (the 6cylinder engine was later used in the Mustang when legal restriction put a ban on classic US muscle cars). Performance wise, the RS 2000 is probably more fun to drive though as sexy as a shoe box. I liked Cowley's Granada though.

reply

It's got to be the 3 litre Capri for me, I agree with Thorsten-Krings about the souped up Escort, one of the worst models of all time.

I owned a 1979 Capri 2.0S in Signal Orange in the mid eighties. Good fun and very noticeable! Although the 3 litre Capri only had 138 bhp, it was the huge amounts of torque available which would have made it fun.

I noticed that in later series, Doyle switched to a gold Capri 3.0S, sequential number plates with Bodie's.

I wonder why Ford never got more performance out of the 3,0 litre engine particularly since it was also used in the Mustang in Charly's Angels.

reply

To my knowledge Ford never used the 3.0 essex V6 in the US model mustang, the mustang II and later models had either 2.3 pinto 4 cyl, 2.8 cologne V6 or 3.3 i6.
It was a bit low on BHP, but then it was an elderly design with an enormously rigid bottom end, being originally designed as a diesel block. 138 bhp isnt much these days but back then it was the pinnacle of what was available in a UK mass-produced car in its price range, and although it didnt rev well the essex V6 did produce prodigious amounts of low down torque. They were easily upgradeable, ie triple webers, turbo/supercharging. The RS3100 capri was a factory built hot rod with more power than standard, but with the 3.0S
I can only summise that in a higher state of tune the capri would have been unacceptably thirsty for the market,

reply

you're absolutely right , they used the 2,8 cologne engine. I basically think that performance was never that much of an issue for mass market cars in Europe before the arrival of the Golf GTI or the Audi Quattro. And essentially by the time Ford had more or less lost that market segment. The XR 3 was reasonably succesful but at the end of the day rather a weak Golf GTI clone. It's funny nowadyas if you watch The Sweeney hearing Regan refer to the 2,0 litre Granada as a high powered squad car.

Sorry to correct you, but the original car Regan used in The Sweeney was a Consul GT with the 3 litre Essex engine (same as in Capri). This was the famous goldy coloured car (if memeory serves, it was something like Copper Beach or Tawny metallic).

In later episodes, they did indeed use a Granada, but it was a 2.8 V6, probably the 2.8i S model (as opposed to Cowley who had a 2.8 Ghia)

I always fancied a 3 litre Consul GT, but they're extremely rare now.

reply

Absolute shame. Igf I remember correctly there was also abeautiful coupe of the Consul.

reply

THey did do a mk1 granada coupe, rare even when new. worth pots of cash now in good condition.
The original sweeney car- NHK 295M is still in existence, (in private ownership and crops up in classic car news snippets every so often.)suprisingly- mindlessly smashing up something as famous as that would be a banger racer's wet dream.

I've had two RS2000's. Both a load of junk! They didn't go, didn't handle, (understeer to oversteer in a flash) and wouldn't stop! The brakes were the worst problem with the RS, they really were unbelievably bad! The second car i had was a ground up restoration by a mark specialist, he'd actually uprated the anchors during the rebuild in an attempt to remedy the issue. I still frightened myself very badly on a number of occasions with that so called 'classic'! Don't ever be tempted guys! It's a mk 2 Ford Escort with a 2 litre lump dropped in..and a bit of crappy plastic stuck on the nose! The suspension couldn't cope, God knows why..anyone who's driven one can tell you that they aren't even that quick! If your idea of fun is connecting with nature...by flying off the road into a hedge..go and buy one! If you want a car that actually HANDLES however, and classics are your thing, buy a good Peugeot 205 1.9 GTI ! It's fast, it REALLY handles..AND IT'LL STOP!!
3 ltr Capri's? Had one of them too! They go like the wind, oversteer hilariously..but do so in such a predictable way that you can hold one with ease on the throttle with a bit of opposite lock! You have a silly grin on your face every time you're behind the wheel...finding one without rusty sills and wheelarches will be your biggest problem. The only real issue with a 3 ltr Capri is it's thirst...25 miles to the gallon is as good as you'll get unless you drive it like an undertaker..and nobody buys one to drive it slowly!! I sold my 3 ltr 10 years ago because i was offered silly money for it, it was almost concourse condition..and i've been kicking myself VERY hard ever since!
I'm now looking for a good 2.8 injection or a last of the line 280 Brooklands, and THIS time i intend to keep it!!
