Some flies in the ointment (SPOILERS)
I am watching this for the first time as I missed it back in 1974. I am enjoying it mostly - but I do have a few criticisms. The acting on the whole is good - apart from the overdone scenes with Sonia Dresdel and Fabia Drake. I also found June Whitfield lacking - she is not really a dramatic actress and her facial expressions were sometimes overdone to the point of pantomime - the same can be said for Sarah Badel. Jo Kendall was unconvincing in virtually every scene she appeared in. Philip Latham and Susan Hampshire carried it all off superbly.
I found some of the scenes puzzling - what was the source of Plantagenet's rage for example when his son had a bad report. There seemed no reason for that at all. And when Lady Laura told Phinn that she would love him as a sister and that he must get married and she would love his wife also - then when he did she said that he had killed her and she never wanted to see him again.
The coincidence of the coat (regarding Bonteens assailant) was a bit hard to take as well - as was the overdone bribery scene with Emilius's landlady and Mrs Max.
I also found it strange that Glencora should tell Plantagenet that she knew he had never loved her when in fact he had told her years before when he saved her lover from ruin.
I have six episodes left - and it will be missed when it is over notwithstanding the above.
