Make that '88--'relevant' youth shows can only stay relevant in eras and environments where real-life youth and their concerns are comparable to those of the show's original characters and their plights. Can you imagine a U.S. show like Fame lasting into the grungy early '90s? Canada's Degrassi (Juniour) High went off the air just in time in the spring of '91. I can't imagine the show coexisting with Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love--it was having enough problems adjusting to Bart Simpson and Laura Palmer's corpse. Similarly--and sadly, Grange Hill should have died off with The Clash, if not The Jam.
