Season 6 beceme very sporadic at the end

Looking at 1983 air dates:
January 2, 9, 16, 23. Skipped January 30, 4 of 5 weeks.
February 6, 20, 27 Skipped February 13, 3 of 4 weeks.
March 6 and 13, skipped March 20 and 27, 2 of 4 weeks.
April 10, skipped April 3, 17, and 24, 1 of 4 weeks.
May 1- normal season ending month, but still only 1 of 5 possible weeks. Seasons 4 and 5 each had 3 episodes in May.

Looks like they definitely knew they were done for.

RIP Ron Swanson. Writers created your awesomeness in S1 and killed it in S7

At least all the episodes aired. Some shows getting axed do not get to air all their episodes until first-run syndication, or they are burned off during the final summer rerun season. I don't think CHiPs was ever put on hiatus. So it was still airing on NBC every month-- probably in May of 1983 the other weeks were reruns which took it through the summer, then it was done.

NBC saved the last episode for May sweeps, figuring people would tune in for the end of the series, even though they did not have the kinds of finales we have now.

Also keep in mind that NBC only ordered x-number of episodes going into season 6. So if the season started early, like in late September or early October, they may have been starting to run out of new episodes by April and needed to save the last one for May sweeps.
