Seigfired a daddy?

At the end of the final episode entitled "Promises to Keep" (series 7 episode 12) Mrs. Clarke (Thora Hird) asks Siegried Farnon (Robert Hardy) if he has any children. Siegfried answers "YES

My question is "does he indeed?" If he does this is the first I've ever heard about it. I didn't even think he had a wife let alone children - I've never seen any of them on the screen.

Does anyone know if this is true or not? Did he get married during the war? I have never read the books so I don't know if this was a "little known fact" a continuity error or a slip-up by the actor Robert Hardy.

Yes in the later books he is married with, I think, 3 children although the relationship between he and his wife is never described.

In the first episode of the "Christmas Specials" you can actually see her. Her name is Caroline Fisher and it is said that Siegfried already met her before the war. During WWII. she went to London and later to America with her father, who was someone important at the war-office. Then she comes back and...well, I don´t want to spoil it for those who haven´t seen the Specials yet .
It´s right that you don´t see her again in the following seasons and I caught myself thinking of him as a bachelor now and then.

There´s one thing, that always confuses me:
There are two episodes in the 3rd season right before the war, where Siegfried courted a woman named Marjorie Egerton. It seemed rather serious and I wondered why they didn´t get in touch again after the war(ok , it´s "just" a TV-series , but you know, how you always think about it, especially if it is as marvellous as "All creatures great and small" ). Someone suspected that Caroline Fisher is supposed to be this Marjorie Egerton because there seemed to be some similarities in their life story - maybe the writers just didn´t pay attention and made up a new name, a new actress (but that could have been for other simple reasons) and with it produced some inconsistencies in the storyline...I´d very much like to think of his wife as being the same woman, because I thought they made a great couple .

Well, I was just rambling .

"You shouldn't keep souvenirs of a killing. You shouldn't have been that sentimental."

I do remember in one of the shows Triston makes a remark to Sigfreid "Hows that nephew of mine" I believe it is in the beginning of Series four. Since Sigfreid replys he is doing fine I believe they are telling us Sigfreid is a dad.
Still tring to find series six and seven, however up through series five this is the only mention of Sigfreds child I recall.

Donald Sinclair is now dead -- but he did have children and all the people were represented as-was (with the names changed apart from the children.) He lived locally until the end. The link below doesn't answer the question, but fills in some family background...

That was in the 1985 Christmas Special.

I'm not sure what family he had in the series, but in real life he had two children, Janet and Alan.

I realize I am a bit after the fact on your question, but wanted to let you know I just re-read the Herriot series and, quoting from the end of "The Lord God Made Them All", set in the early 60s, but reflects back in time as well, James mentions Siegfried's children, Alan and Janet.

If you haven't read the books and love this series, you simply must spend the time to borrow the books from your library (or look for them on Amazon or some place) and fall in love all over again.
