the captive bolt pistol or stunner used

episode #1." horse sense".

vet examines a horse, decides it needs to be put down, the owner of the horse argues with him. during the argument the vet says " he has a humane killer", "put him down", and "shoot him".

the vet then goes to his car, takes out what looks like an 8" X 1" piece of pipe and removes something from the dashboard. pulls it out of the dash, like a radio knob, looks at it, as if it to check something, goes into the barn( you dont see what he does) next you hear what sounds like a very low power gun shot, more like a "ramset" power tool that sets bolts with gun powder.

anybody know what he used?

i asked this elsewhere and many guessed a captive bolt pistol or stunner. it drove a bolt into the horses head, either by spring, compressed air or gunpowder.
but no one can explain what he removed from the dash board.
cigarette lighter, to light the gun powder, was guessed, but that does not sound right. the cigarette lighter would have cooled off by the time he reached the barn, and if the gun powder was left in the pistol, in the car, it would have been destroyed by moisture.

if you know what it was, do you know of a link to a museum, or someplace that will describe how it worked?

Did they even have dashboard cigarette lighters in those days?

i believe they started in the 1920's, but i could be wrong. also, i cant even guess what the age or even the make was of that car.

i either have to find someone who knows old vet tools, or knows that car.

i did find modern captive bolt pistols, fired by a blank firearm cartridge, compressed air or a spring.
i also found a pic of an antique one, but no info on how it was fired.

i also cant tell if he pulls it out of the dash, like a cigarette lighter, or pulls the knob off of something, like the radio. my view is blocked by the steering wheel.

looks like i answered my own question.

series 2 episode 4 " the beauty of the beast".

james puts a horse down. he places the pipe looking instrument i saw against the horses head, then pulls the knob looking thing i saw out of his pocket and strikes the top of the instrument with the knob, discharging the device. the knob was used to strike the firing pin, or some other type of device used to activate the instrument.
it probably has a firearm cartridge in it, which a pin strikes to fire the bolt into the horses head.

the only unanswered question is, what did he remove the dash?

i am going to guess anything can be used to strike the firing pin and he either used a knob from the radio, or what ever.
