Tape on the Windows

Why did they have to put tape crosses on the windows during WW2? I've seen this in a few of the epidoes now.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think it was to keep any lights from shining out of the houses which would let the enemy know where the villages and towns were so they could bomb them.

This was in case a bomb landed close enough for the blast to break the windows but not to really do much structural damage. Basically it's the same reason that you tape windows when expecting a hurricane to hit - to keep the glass from shattering too much and spraying the room with shards.

I would have to say that JR Slaughter's comment would have to be the correct answer. I was going to post his answer up but I see that he already did so.

Han shot first.
