was Siegfried married? (or had a girlfriend :)

Hi! I used to love this series as a child and now that they are showing it again I've been glued to the spot everyday - however, I was out of the country for a while and now watching series 5 (with skiing and stuff) I missed out on series 4 and someone said and there were few mentions in the web as well of Siegfried being married to Caroline. Who is Caroline and where is she hiding now? Or have I misunderstood.
As far as I can tell Siegfried looks like a bachelor to me.

please help

In the 1985 feature-length special (packaged these days as a movie), "Caroline" figured prominently in the story and by the end Siegfried had proposed to her. However, the actress didn't return for the remainder of the series once it got going agan in 1988, and as a result she was just referred to now and then.

Hope this helps!

I don't think in either the series it ever mentioned Siegfried being married, however in the books it mentions a wife and children. In real life Siegfried was a widower ( he lost his wife to cancer i think) who later remarried.

I just recently saw the show here in Germany and I watched it for the first time. I taped every episode and I assure you that Siegfried being married and having two children was mentionend more than one time . He doesn´t even live in Skeldale House anymore. It´s right that you never see either his wife or his kids and that´s why I tend to forget every now and then that he´s married. I also think he looks like a bachelor to me.
But it would be a shame if he had never married .

IMDBer of mystery: "In the 1985 feature-length special (packaged these days as a movie), "Caroline" figured prominently in the story and by the end Siegfried had proposed to her."

That was in the 1983 special, not the 1985.

spoiler alert BIG spoiler alert...bummer spoiler alert about Siegfried the real one's final situation

I read the bio of the real James Herriot and the real Siegfred was widowed, became despondent in later life, ill and committed suicide.

I was totally bummed out by that news and wish I never read the bio but there it was.

EDIT: The NY Times carried Donald Sinclair's obit in June, 1995, saying nothing of cause of death but writing that his brother Brian (Tristan) had died in 1988, Alf Wight a few months earlier, and his wife of 53 years, Audrey, 2 weeks earlier. He left a daughter Jan and son Alan. Wikipedia states that he overdosed on barbituates and we must conclude, that at the age of 84, even with children left behind, he felt no reason to go on. His health at the time is not mentioned but knowing how much he loved life, well...may they all rest in peace.
