I am hearing on the grapevine that the series might come back in a new format. Called Young James it will look at the very early life of JH and might even star Harry Potter himself Daniel Radcliffe. Johnny Byrne (the lead writer) was quoted in the UK press as saying that he had spent about nine months on scripts.
Daniel Radcliffe is the boy (now a young man) who played Harry Potter in the movies.
Actually I think he is quite a good actor. He isn't just the usual precocious child actor - he has done some serious stage work since Harry P. and got rave reviews for his acting. So I disagree that it would be wrong to do the 'Young James Herriot' series - it would effectively be a very different programme from the ACG&S we all know and love, so what harm could it do?
I noticed that iMDB has another entry for All Creatures Great and Small with a 2010 date...there are no details for the entry, but I assume that it's a movie instead of a TV series as the title is not in quotation marks.
I agree. How could Radcliffe measure up to Christopher Timoth? In fact, how could ANYONE else even come close to filling the shoes of all the characters. They would probably debauch the series by adding sex and coarse language, etc. Let us keep our memories and our videos/CDs to play forever.
I'd love it too. I want very much to see what happened in Siegfried and James' later years.
I'd also love finally seeing the relationship between Siegfried and his wife Caroline. I know that Donald Sinclair was a private person but both he and his wife are now dead, so I don't feel that it would invade their privacy.
I have rewatched the series recently, especially the first three seasons before the war when England's economy was still suffering from the 1929 collapse. This series, set in a time of economic hardship, has such immense resonance with our own time that I really take heart from their simple courage and perseverance. If BBC was smart they would run the series again from the beginning--especially on BBC America--and would use that publicity to launch it again.
Well with how bad BBC shows have been I would be a bit worried. I do like the idea of exploring pre-series stories, but where would they get enough source? As I understand it post series 3 and specials it all just started being made-up.
I don't know why American PBS don't show again the great series of the 70's and 80's... All Creatures was run here in the summer of ??? and I remember being glued to my little black and white TV (I was a student) and loved every minute of it. Same for Jewel in the Crown. I suppose the payment for airing rights might be high but for what PBS is showing these days, if they asked for money based on promising reruns...and think of the renewed DVD sales afterwards. People forget, don't look up as we do on IMDb, don't rent...
I looked up tonight based on a comment from a friend and here I am, posting again.
Different stations have different rules. Maryland Public TV was rerunning them weekday afternoons and Sunday early evenings for a while 4 years ago. Just after I bought my mega set in March 2008, they lifted it. Good thing I got it when I did, especially since it was "not there".
I'm rewatching this series right now and about to begin Season 2, and it hasn't lost any of its charm on me, still very engaging. It is so relaxing and find it a great way to end the day watching one or two episodes before bed, leave me smiling just before sleep comes.
This is only my second post in this board, the first was sometime in April 2010 after finishing Season 1. A friend from another board told me about this series being available on YouTube, and I was truly grateful since Herriot's books are all-time favorites of mine since my pre-teen years. And I have no idea whatsoever that it's been translated to the small screen. It was truly a pleasant, very welcome surprise at the time. As I've said then, British shows, whether on tv or on the big screen are seldom shown here in my Asian country, unless they have big studios and rich marketing companies pushing them for international release, even rarer are dvds of British movies - except those of Connery's James Bond movies and those after him. Its American movies that dominates our cinemas and the cable stations.
As one poster above, I also like the idea of pre-series stories, or those after the very last of its episodes. But I hope they'll find actors and an actress who have striking resemblances to the main characters in All Creatures of the old series and, just as important, excellent acting skills.
Running the series again, as one poster above said, will be a great treat, and if BBC does it, I hope and pray someone very knowledgeable and with clout here in our local television industry can do something so it'll be shown here also in my Asian country too. I remember the Canadian series, Ann of Green Gables was shown here many many years ago and I think it attracted an appreciative audience because from a late night schedule it was moved to a prime time evening program.
Btw, the post by ladybast somewhere above, dated Feb. 8, 2009 mentioned something about Siegfried and his wife Caroline ... is Donald Sinclair Siegfried's real name?
Please pardon my ignorance and thanks to anyone who'll enlighten me about the matter.

Yes, Donald Sinclair is Siegfried's real name. And I share your feelings about this series. During a stressful time in my life I could come home, watch an episode of All Creatures, and bask in the innocence, warmth and humor of the program. It was a lifesaver for me.
Thanks for the info, Robert Hardy gave a memorable portrayal of this real life person, with and explosive temper, yet can be generous and funny at times, also a devoted brother to Tristan altho he may seem sadistic at times.
