Inspired people to be vets!

I read somewhere that ACG&S was actually responsible for a huge spike in vet students in the UK. I just love the books and the series. First class all the way!

I read that too. Surprising, in a way, because they didn't shy away from showing the down side of being a vet. The series didn't make me want to become a vet but it did make me want to be a part of the family that lived at Skeldale house.

I can understand that! I was a nurse for many years and must say it certainly has its downside too. But a wonderful and noble profession to be part of all the same. It would certainly help to be part of a small practise like that and enjoying a lovely 'family' life as well. IMO it is the people and the atmosphere that leads us to romanticise it, when really live at that time was uncertain and very tough. War looming etc.

Every vet student should read these books! These days young vet students just want to make money. It's all about buying a practice and getting as many clients as possible and forcing expensive procedures like teeth cleaningsnder general anesthesia ($1,200). One vet I took my little darling version of "trickie woo" to, she charged for every little bit that I'm sure used to be included in the $50 exam price, extra was the heart
listening to $35, the eye check for glaucoma $40, expressing the butt bott thing for $35 well you get the idea. Back then vets were real healers and not so very very greedy. Theres even seminars they go to in order to learn to bill for maximum profit.
