Effects In the ending scene (NO Spoilers)

The final scene of the movie had a short clip where the colors of everything changed briefly. I do not want to state anything further about the ending as that would be a spoiler, and I hate to mention them. I do not need to mention the ending here and will not do so. But, I would like to comment on how the colors changed. This movie was filmed when film truly meant film and not "digital"- so some people are probably asking how this was done in that day and age.

The answer is that a special film was used. A type of movie film that was specialized; though used quite a lot for various reasons. That film type is Color Infrared. NOT the black and white infrared film that one usually associates with the term "infrared". Color infrared film is sensitive to infrared light and uses it to shift the colors seen in visible light; this gives an interesting effect as human skin and vegetation change color tones in this type of film. I do not have time or space to give a detailed lecture about this film; simply to state that it was used quite a lot then in aerial surveying (as the colors will show vegetation that is diseased differently than healthy vegetation). The film makers of this somewhat undistinguished movie decided to use it (must have gotten a discount from the manufacturer) for its peculiar effects.

I'll sleep better tonight knowing this.

reply

yeah, me too. YAWN!

reply

I just watched it and was wondering myself if this was done with infrared film, it was a really cool effect.

reply

Unlike many of the snarky respondents here, I appreciate your explanation because I was curious about the effects myself. I find these old-school special effects much more satisfying than CGI.

I don't know why this post got two rude, sarcastic responses. It was genuinely interesting!

I'm going to watch this film tonight.

reply

Yes, they were very rude responses, especially because the original poster took the time to explain technical artistry that seems pretty much forgotten today. Enjoy the movie – especially that final scene, which is mesmerizing.

reply

It got one rude response and one response which may or may not have been rude depending on how well the respondent did in fact sleep that night.

reply

Very interesting, thank you!
