Best scenes that put this movie above others.....

If you ask the average person what the best or most memorable scene is from "Squirm" is, no doubt, most will probably say the boat scene when Roger is viciously attacked by the worms. But as a big fan of this movie since its release in '77, I would beg to differ.

My favorite scene is in the second half of the movie: It is now night. Mick has gone looking for wood and not returned. Alma has been buried by a bathroom full of worms (known only to the viewers), Mrs. Sanders is slipping away into mental oblivion. Gerri, trying to hold things together, asks her mother if she has locked the front door. "Yes, but I left the back door open...." As she continues to ramble on, the music builds suspence as Gerri quickly runs to the back door. As she reaches the door, a crazed Roger grabs Gerri from behind, the music reaches a climax, and Roger puts his hands over the candles to extinguish them, which blacks out the scene, as the score ends abruptly.

This scene works so well. When I saw this at the movies (numerous times), I loved the scene then, but could never appriciate the score during this scene, as the audience would start screaming as soon as Gerri started running for the door. Now, with the DVD, I can get the full effect (though the screaming was fun too).

There is so much skill that is evident in this movie. The problem today is that many people have become so jaded from modern movies and TV shows, that its hard to comprehend actually sitting and watching an older movie from start to finish, without trying to make fun of it. Don't get me wrong, I love MST3K too, but I just don't think this particular movie really fits thier profile. Maybe certain elements of it do, but as a whole, this movie is really too good for that.

I think you're absolutely right. The fact that MST3K featured "Squirm" on their show is interesting though in what it reveals. It is not a truly terrible film, but just because they featured it on MST3K, many people are quick to tell you how terrible "Squirm" is. The people who crow about how awful it is probably only think that because they saw it on that TV show. They don't seem to understand that the whole tone of the film was supposed to be tongue-in-cheek and not taken seriously at all. Of course the idea of killer worms is silly. But it is a very weird idea, too.

Alot of my friends cant watch older movies without thinking it's stupid or lame because of modern flicks. This film would be ungodly slow paced but I thought it was greatly paced. Pity since I enjoy watching older flicks over newer ones most of the time
