Critical reaction?

I’ve read some reviews of SLIPPER and I was amazed at how mean-spirited some of them were. They criticized the score, the acting, the casting, the direction. These reviews were mostly from the US publications and newspapers. I wonder if any UK fans recall the critical reception to SLIPPER in England?

To be honest, it seems MOST movie musicals get trashed by the major publications. You commonly read adjectives like “bloated” “elephantine” “saccharine” and “overproduced” for some really lovely musicals of that period. Except for maybe MARY POPPINS and maybe WEST SIDE STORY, many of the “biggies” from the 60’s and 70’s got hammered.

Which is really sad...they can transport you in a way that other films can't. The music brings you to a whole new place emotionally and involves you even more deeply in the story.

It's their signature. IMDB doesn't sepriate siggys from the things that are said.

I have no idea why the critics were so mean to this musical/movie. I really think it's sweet and beautifully done.
