I've loved this film since I was a kid and i've always been curious but for some reason never discovered what time this was supposed to be set in, can anyone help?
shareI think it is difficult to give an exact time period, considering that it is set in a totaly made up country.

That is right. The big cuffs are courtly, though, Edward wears a simply brown jacket with a rounded front and smaller cuffs on the scene. That is what most people wore in the 1770s and 1780s though people like Samuel Adams have rather big (but not as extreme) cuffs with rather plain jackets in the 1770s too (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:J_S_Copley_-_Samuel_Adams.jpg).
