Good comparison with 'The Gunfighter' - Gregory Peck

Just had a thought - compare 'The Shootist' with 'The Gunfighter': - both are aging gunmen who have outlived their time. Peck's character (Ringo?) is in town to see his wife and child. Wayne's one (Books) is there to die. Both die in a saloon.

A wide screen just makes a bad film twice as bad - Sam Goldwyn

I haven't seen The Gunfighter but it's funny you should say that because The Duke wanted Gregory Peck's role in that film.

"Both die in a saloon."

Not quite - Ringo is shot while on horseback, then dies lying in the alley behind the saloon.
