John Wayne Snub???

I will not say that John Wayne's performance was snubbed by Oscar in 1976... but...
Giancarlo Giannini nominated for a foriegn film... Sly Stallone nominated for Rocky, William Holden nominated for Network.
In hindsight John Wayne performance was better than all of them.

agree?

BTW
I believe DeNiro should have been the ultimate winner that year in the acting race for "Taxi Driver"
I just think Wayne should have been nominated

1976 was a tough year for leading actors.

I agree that Stallone was the weakest of the 5 nominated - and Finch should have been in the supporting actor category.

Wayne, Bacall and Ron Howard would surely have been nominated had the movie been released in 1975 or 1977 (both much weaker years acting wise).

I agree about Wayne and Bacall but I think Ron Howard is awful in this movie.

Yes, could make the argument he did his best acting in The Shootist, carrying such gravitas, power & depth, more so than anything he did in so far it was a magnificent culmination of a career. It's almost as though since True Grit was given somewhat as a lifetime award, atoning for a history of Oscar snubs, there was a slanted sense to not recognize him again for some truly great acting...

Holden's nomination was deserved. Ironically, Finch (from the same film) was extremely overrated IMHO and Finch won Best Actor. In any event, DeNiro absolutely should have taken home Best Actor for playing Travis Bickle. But it would have been awesome for both John Wayne and Robert DeNiro to be nominated in the same year!

I think Wayne hoped for an Oscar nod for The Shootist, and he certainly deserved it. His performance here was splendid, and certainly among his best. But it was a popular and tough year for actors, although there's no doubt he was forwarded for the academy's consideration.
