Because as beautifully filmed as this film is, and as compelling as the story is, the characters are somewhat wooden and two dimensional. Don't get me wrong: Kristofferson and Miles have great chemistry, but I appreciate them more as "types" -- the lovesick widow, the tough yet kindly seaman -- than as real people. Maybe that's partly intentional, and Carlino was trying to make this more of a parable than a real-life drama, but it puts the film at an emotional remove. Still, it's a very worthy movie that should be better known, and should be seen.
There, daddy, do I get a gold star?
