Fletcher refused the Senator- then agreed his 'recomission'???

WE see Fletcher refusing the Senator's money, the rebels being slain with him at gunpoint, then all too soon he is agreeing to hunt down Josey- what gives?

Why the sudden change of heart?

From another earlier post:

Because he felt that Wales would THINK him a backstabber. Ironically Wales when told by the kid that Fletcher was in on the ambush at the surrender replied that he wouldn't have expected that from him- so he was genuinely surprised by that news.

Furthermore, what the hell choice did he have at that point? "Nope, ain't gonna do it, Senator!". "No problem, Mr. Fletcher.....we've got a bullet for you, too".

Fletcher knew Wales intimately and knew he would seek revenge, eventually against him as well. He did it as an obligation to all the men who could cross paths with Wales and die as a result.
